DIY Insect Hotel

We can do a lot to cater to the insects in our environment. Of course, specific plants are good for insects and there are other small steps we can take. But, we can also take on slightly larger projects, such as making an insect hotel. In this article I will describe how to make a bumblebee hotel. This does seem somewhat daunting, but it’s not too difficult!

You will need the following items:

· Wooden box

· A drill (appropriate for wood)

· Plant debris

This is the wooden box I used.

I then drilled a series of holes in the lid of the box. Make sure they are large enough fro insects to get into. Also, watch out when using the drill!

Then, I filled the box with plant debris. Make sure the box is relatively full, and that the debris is quite dry.

This is the completed box:

Taking on a project may seem daunting at first. But, this is a relatively simple way to contribute to the ecosystem in your garden. I would recommend adding a variety of insect hotels to a garden, allowing a range of insects to come and make their home in your garden!
