Throughout these blogs we have been telling ways you as an individual can change your habits, and try to make a difference, however small it is, to help the planet. But truth be told, although these little changes are helpful, the biggest culprit aren’t us the consumers, but actually mega-corporations. 100 companies account for 71% of the world’s emissions. To deflect blame they create surface-level schemes, like getting rid of plastic straws (which many disabled people require), this is called greenwashing. They also created terms such as the well-known, ‘carbon footprint’ so that the public eye is diverted off them and the masses become occupied in policing each other. It is time we realise that these companies, like Shell, Nestlé etc. need to change their ways. The most important change we can bring to the world, and everything that we love and care for is to grab the issue by the roots, rather than just cutting the leaves.
This isn’t to say that all the work you are putting in your personal life is for nothing. Individual change is important, but it is more important to realise the root of the issue, the earth isn’t overpopulated, not everyone can go vegan/vegetarian, we have just been told it’s our fault our whole lives. Please try to make a change yourself, however big or small it is, whether it is to start using a reusable water bottle or to demand change from your government. We all have a part to play in this world, for ourselves and our animal + plant friends. So next time you think of policing someone about their habits towards nature, think about whether you are targeting the spoilt roots, or the or the droopy flower.
